By definition, grooming means the practice of good hygiene techniques. Good grooming starts with brushed teeth, showering, neat and clean hair, trimmed fingernails and clean clothes. For my second life skills course with the Covenant House, speakers Lauren Hooks and Terrence Jenny Bennett came by and spoke to the residents about proper grooming etiquette.
Lauren Hooks a cosmetology student at H.C.C, spoke to young women about the importance of taking care of your skin, styling your hair, removing unwanted hair, keeping your nails clean and short, and wearing perfume. Terrance Jenny Bennett a Fragrance Expert spoke about similar grooming techniques but from a man’s point of view. Both men and women should take care of their skin on a routine basis, it’s an important part of grooming and boosts our confidence. Moisturize your skin properly, since the lack of hydration can make it dull. First, an important rule is hairstyles must fit the shape of your face. Finding a barber or hairstylist your trust to consult in should be ideal. Washing your hair twice a week with shampoo and conditioner, then style your hair accordingly.

Removing unwanted hair and manscaping…. easy advice is keep everything neat and tidy. This doesn’t go for everyone, by removing hair from your hands, legs, and underarms make you look presentable. You also don’t want to use the same device you use to shave your face to shave other body parts.
One thing that I notice when I shake hands with someone, man or woman is how clean their nails are. Feet, nails, and palms are often the most ignored parts of our bodies. Keep your nails clean and short, only takes a few minutes or you can get a manicure or pedicure once a month or however you see fit.
Finding the proper fragrance for your skin type is very important. You don’t want to be too loud and have your fragrance walk in the room before you do, that wouldn’t be a good thing. Everyone is attracted to a pleasing fragrance; be careful when choosing your next perfume (guys have toilette and perfume, perfume cologne last longer). Applying your fragrance starts on dry skin, right after the shower. Spray a light amount and do not overspray. Apply your fragrance to your heat spots (right and left side of your neck and inside your wrist). A few don’ts are…. Don’t spray and walk, and don’t spray fragrance on your clothes.
It was a great opportunity to partner with Anthony Skincare brand to give the residence of the Covenant House some gift bags.
