Back to School Soccer Clinic with Houston Dynamo Academy
One day in 2016 when I was visiting Irvinton Village. I walked by a field and wanted to put together a summer event. After that thought ran through my mind, I left it alone. In the beginning of 2017 when I returned from my Italy trip. I sat down and wrote down some goals for the new year and a back to school event came to mind. When I wrote my goals down, I started working on goal 1 and worked my way down the list and finally came to the back to school event.
My first step towards this new goal was location, the great thing about this situation was that I already built an email relationship with someone who represented the Houston Dynamo and I reached back out to her. We hopped on a call and I presented her with my idea and had to wait to get confirmation. A few weeks went passed and I finally received my confirmation and proceeded with my second step, which is getting the kids to attend the event. I knew getting kids was going to probably be the toughest task, but it went smoothly. Irvinton Village loved the idea of a soccer clinic for the kids, which was a fresh and different idea.
My third step was getting volunteers to donate school supplies and their time in this hot Houston heat. After reaching out to friends, family, business associates, and clients. I received positive feedback on the event and attendance from potential volunteers. School supplies would benefit kids boys and girls ages 5-12years old from Kindergarten – 6th grade. Volunteers came with bags and bags of school supplies, we received nearly 50 book bags, and not to mention time and effort. I couldn’t tell who was having more fun during the event. At one point I was so happy and grateful that everyone was enjoying themselves and the weather held up. Soccer, like any sport, is a great team sport. But also teaches you how to understand others, helps maintain health, strength, endurance, teaches coordination, and sharing. Also, increases confidence and self-esteem.
I truly enjoy being able to give back to the community, especially to kids. Being able to host toy drives, story time events and back to school events really means a lot to me and my growth as a man in the community.
